New for 2026

The Spanish Grand Prix moves to a brand new street circuit in Madrid built around the IFEMA convention center. Spain now hosts two races, with the Barcelona-Catalunya GP remaining as a separate event.

Championship Format

Formula 1 awards two separate World Championships each season: the Drivers' Championship and the Constructors' Championship. Both are decided by accumulating points across all 24 races.

Drivers' Championship

Each of the 22 drivers earns points based on their finishing position in every Grand Prix and Sprint race. The driver with the most points at the end of the season is crowned World Drivers' Champion. The defending champion for 2026 is Lando Norris.

Constructors' Championship

The Constructors' Championship combines the points scored by both drivers on the same team. This title reflects overall team performance, including car design, strategy, pit stops, and reliability. The defending constructors' champion for 2026 is McLaren-Mercedes.

How Points Are Awarded

Points are given to the top 10 finishers in each Grand Prix:

  • 1st: 25 points
  • 2nd: 18 points
  • 3rd: 15 points
  • 4th: 12 points
  • 5th: 10 points
  • 6th: 8 points
  • 7th: 6 points
  • 8th: 4 points
  • 9th: 2 points
  • 10th: 1 point

Sprint races award points to the top 8 finishers:

  • 1st: 8 points
  • 2nd: 7 points
  • 3rd: 6 points
  • 4th: 5 points
  • 5th: 4 points
  • 6th: 3 points
  • 7th: 2 points
  • 8th: 1 point

Key Change Since 2025

The bonus point for setting the fastest lap during a race has been removed. Championship standings are now determined purely by finishing positions in Grand Prix and Sprint races.

Sprint Weekends

Six of the 24 race weekends feature a shorter Sprint race on Saturday in addition to the main Grand Prix on Sunday. The 2026 Sprint weekends are:

  1. China
  2. Miami
  3. Canada
  4. Great Britain
  5. Netherlands
  6. Singapore
